Application Timeline
Complete and Submit Application
Background Check
Applicants will complete a comprehensive background questionnaire and submit required documents including consent forms for background checks. Applicants’ backgrounds are reviewed for employment history, military history, criminal history, financial standing, driving history, gambling habits, and drug use/possession/distribution.
Physical Fitness Assessment and Physical Agility Test
Applicants who have made it this far in the process will complete the physical agility test and physical fitness assessment.
Oral Interview
Candidates are evaluated based on background questionnaire, education, experience, criminal history, driving history, credit check, and performance during fitness testing. Top performing candidates will be selected for an oral interview with the Fire Chief’s Interview Panel.
Conditional Offer of Employment
A conditional offer of employment is made to viable applicants. Applicants are required to achieve a minimum score on the Accuplacer Test if no college degree (Associates or higher) has been obtained within the last 10 years. The offer is also conditional on the successful completion of a medical evaluation, drug screen, psychological evaluation, and polygraph examination.
Written Examination (Accuplacer)
We honor Accuplacer exam scores as valid when taken up to six months before an application is submitted. An Accuplacer test can be scheduled with Human Resources and is offered at City Hall free of charge.
Medical Evaluation and Drug Screen
Viable applicants will be scheduled for a physical examination and drug screen with a City of Marietta-contracted medical facility.
Psychological Evaluation
Both the written and interview sections of the psychological testing are administered by the City's psychologist. The psychologist will review results of written tests and then interview candidate. This process should take approximately four (4) hours.
Polygraph Examination
All applicants will be subject to a polygraph examination to verify the information provided in the background questionnaire and interviews is truthful.
Final Offer of Employment
Candidates who have successfully completed all requirements will be given a Final Offer of Employment with a set start date to begin the Marietta Fire Department Fire/EMS Training Academy.
