The Historic Board of Review is composed of 9 members. The Mayor and members of the Marietta City Council have each nominated one member to the Board. The ninth member of the Board is nominated by the Mayor and the City Council as an "at-large" representative who has demonstrated an expertise or special interest, experience or education in history, architecture or preservation. Members serve their terms without pay. Their duties include preserving, relocating and demolishing historic buildings, constructing new buildings, ensuring visual compatibility factors (such as height, proportion, shapes, scale, etc.) and approving exterior changes to paint colors, signs, awnings, etc. within the district.

Responsibilities

The Marietta Board of Review makes decisions regarding the preservation of historic buildings with the historic district set forth in Section 7-8-8-020. The purpose of a historic district is to effectively promote the educational, cultural, economic, aesthetic value and general welfare of the city.

The Marietta Historic Board of Review was created by Marietta municipal ordinance (7-8-8) to help the Downtown Marietta Development Authority consider applications for changes to buildings within the historic district. The historic district is defined in Section 7-8-8-020 of the Marietta municipal code. It is within the downtown Marietta district, but considerably smaller.
