Cookbook Club Explores Southern Foodways

MARIETTA, GA - Cobb Landmarks is excited to announce the introduction of a new initiative: the Southern Foodways Cookbook Club. This five-month program invites participants to connect, learn, and appreciate the rich culture that shaped Southern food traditions. The club will explore Housekeeping in the Sunny South, an 1885 cookbook authored by E. R. Tennent featuring recipes from Marietta. The Cookbook Club will offer participants the opportunity to cook and sample recipes and discuss the history embedded in the dishes.

Program Details:

  • What: The Southern Foodways Cookbook Club
  • When: The club will meet the first Saturday of each month, January through May 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
  • Where: Club meetings will take place at the historic William Root House.
  • Facilitators: The sessions will be guided by Cobb Landmarks Food Historians Clarissa Lynch and Misha Harp.
  • Curriculum: Discussions will focus on significant cultural influences, including the impact of Black culture (February meeting), the roles of women in the South (March meeting), and how crop availability has shaped Southern foodways (April meeting).
  • Registration: Registration is $200 per person and includes a copy of the historic Housekeeping in the Sunny South cookbook (a $30 value).
