It is the decision of the company officer to determine the availability of time for his or her crew to perform physical fitness training. Each station is equipped with a variety of fitness equipment that will support a number of different types of fitness training.
A well-balanced Firefighter uses coordination and control when performing firefighting activities. As athletes have specific movements that they must train to perform, so must Firefighters if they wish to perform well and without injury. The City of Marietta Fire Department has adopted CrossFit (www.crossfit.com) as its main workout program.
CrossFit is not a specialized fitness program, but a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of ten recognized fitness domains: Cardio-respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy (CrossFit Foundations, 2002).
