MARIETTA – Many homeowners will notice an incorrect increase in the estimated City tax amount on their 2023 Notice of Assessments prepared and sent by the Cobb County Board of Tax Assessors. This is due to the omission of the Floating Homestead Exemption. The Floating Homestead exemption is a result of the 2002 Property Tax Reassessment Relief Act passed by the State Legislature where qualified homeowners in some areas of the state are exempt from taxation on reassessed residential property value increases. The increases are “frozen as an exemption”.
The exemption is still applicable for City of Marietta taxpayers and reduces the taxable amount owed. In many cases the city portion of the taxes will be much less than the amount shown. The reduction will be correctly reflected on the upcoming property tax bills issued by the City in August.
The City of Marietta’s mileage rate has actually decreased for four years in a row.
Taxpayers are encouraged to contact the City of Marietta Tax Division at 770-794-5680 or email taxdivision@mariettaga.gov with any questions or concerns.
