MARIETTA – In conjunction with Winter Weather Preparedness Week from December 2-8, 2018, the Marietta Fire Department would like to remind citizens of the potential threats our City faces due to winter weather in Georgia.
Ice is one of the major winter weather problems across the Southeast. The accumulation of ice on trees and power lines can cause these items to fall. Communications can become disrupted and roadways can become blocked when this occurs. It is important to remember that bridges and overpasses generally freeze before other surfaces. In addition, ice can form on the roadway and not even be visible to the driver - this is commonly known as black ice.
Another safety hazard is wind chill. Wind chill considers how wind and cold feel on exposed skin rather than solely the actual temperature. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from the body at an accelerated rate, driving down the body temperature, thus please ensure you pay attention to weather forecasts.
Please check out this helpful chart which will ensure you are familiar with any winter weather terms.
