MARIETTA – The City of Marietta is pleased to announce that Assistant Chief Tim Milligan has been selected to serve as the City’s new Fire Chief to succeed retired Fire Chief Jackie Gibbs who served 18 years in that position.
Chief Milligan has served the City of Marietta for the past 21 years. He joined the MFD in 1997 and during his tenure has worked in each division within the department. He has held various positions and served the last 3 years as the Fire Marshal for the City. He has earned numerous technical and professional certificates, as well as several degrees culminating with a Master’s in Business from Regis University. He is very involved in the community, having participated in Leadership Cobb, co-chairing the class of 2017 and currently supports many local non-profits in varying capacities. For the last 6 years he has served as a board member on the State Firefighters Pension Board, a position appointed by Governor Nathan Deal. He also is the current President of the Georgia Association of Public Pension Trustees.
“Chief Milligan has been an integral part of our fire department and the City for over two decades,” said City Manager Bill Bruton. “His dedication to the citizens of our City makes Chief Milligan the natural choice to lead our ISO Class 1 fire department. Chief Milligan was instrumental in gaining the ISO Class 1 Designation for our department in 2015. Less than 1% of fire departments in the country have this highly coveted ranking and we were one of the first ten departments in Georgia to obtain this designation. His extensive training, commitment to the fire service and successful tenure in the three divisions, Fire Suppression, Training and Fire Prevention make him very qualified to step into this role.”
Chief Milligan was selected to serve as the new Fire Chief after an extensive interview process. The City received 66 applicants for the position of Fire Chief. After reviewing all submitted applications, a panel interviewed ten candidates. City Manager Bill Bruton then made the recommendation to City Council for Tim Milligan to serve as the new Fire Chief. This recommendation was approved unanimously by City Council at a Special Called Meeting on Tuesday, June 26, 2018.
“It is truly an honor to have been selected to serve as the new Fire Chief for the Marietta Fire Department,” said Chief Tim Milligan. “I am humbled and excited to be able to serve both a community that I have loved for over 20 years as well as the exceptional men and women of our department. Together, building upon the many accomplishments we have achieved, we will continue to make our department an exceptional one.”
