Marietta Fire Chief Jackie Gibbs honored employees tonight at the department's annual awards ceremony and welcomed eight new firefighters who graduated from training.

Recruits Mark Howard, Richard Bianculli, Austan Jackson, Allan Jones, Malcholm Lawson Jr., Lars Marvin, Dagan Smith, and Michael Smith graduated tonight and will be assigned to one of the city's six fire stations.
The recruits were certified to the NPQ Firefighter I level, a national standard for firefighter training. They also received four weeks of additional training to meet Marietta Fire Department requirements. Training subjects included rope rescue, confined space, vehicle extrication and hazardous materials operations.
In addition to firefighting skills, recruits were required to complete 10 weeks of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training. They received instruction in the treatment of shock, traumatic injuries, cardiac conditions and other life threatening emergencies.
Fire training culminated with a night drill known as "The Crucible." The exercise encompassed eight evalations requiring the recruits to demonstrate their newly acquired skills under realistic fire conditions.
