MARIETTA, GA -- In a speech to the Rotary Club of Marietta January 10, Mayor Bill Dunaway announced a major mixed-use redevelopment project is being considered for the Franklin Road area of Marietta.
ABG Development, LLC recently entered into contracts to acquire four properties along the Franklin Road corridor. The total assemblage involves approximately 70 acres of land.
ABG Development is working with Tunnell-Spangler Walsh and Associates to create a pedestrian friendly mixed-use development plan for office, retail and residential housing.
Preliminary plans for the development apply initiatives recommended in the city of Marietta/Cobb County Delk transit-oriented development Livable Centers Initiative study completed in November of 2004.
The Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) is a program offered by the Atlanta Regional Commission that encourages local jurisdictions to plan and implement strategies that link transportation improvements with land use development strategies to create sustainable, livable communities consistent with regional development policies.
The primary goals of the LCI program are to encourage a diversity of mixed-income residential neighborhoods, employment, shopping and recreation choices while providing access to a range of travel modes including transit, roadways, walking and biking.
Further information on the redevelopment will be announced as details are finalized.
The proposed redevelopment would be a major step in the city's efforts to revitalize Franklin Road, a goal city council adopted as part of its most recent vision statement.
The Franklin Road area of the city of Marietta is a United States Department of Justice Weed and Seed community. The federal program helps neighborhoods with serious crime problems bring together people and resources to prevent and control crime and improve the quality of life in the area.
