Thanksgiving Fire Safety
The Marietta Fire Department would like to urge you to practice fire safety during the upcoming holiday season.
Thanksgiving is reported as the peak day for home cooking fires which are the leading cause of fires in the United States. Cooking fires are also reported as the leading cause of civilian fire related injuries.
These few safety tips could keep you, your family, and your home safe from fire during the holidays.
- Never leave cooking food unattended.
- Keep all items that could burn away from cooking appliances.
- Keep children out of the kitchen while cooking.
- Do not wear loose fitting clothing while cooking. It can easily become caught on handles which could spill and they can easily catch fire.
- Keep the handles of the pots and pans pointed to the back of the stove.
- Never use water to extinguish grease fires. This will only make the fire larger. Instead turn off the stove and cover the fire with a lid, another pot or pan, or a damp wash cloth that can smother the fire.
