Definition of a gang
The Georgia criminal code 16-15-3 defines a criminal street gang as follows:
"Criminal street gang" means any organization, association or group of three or more persons associated in fact, whether formal or informal, which engages in criminal gang activity as defined in paragraph (1) of this Code section. The existence of such organization, association or group of individuals associated in fact may be established by evidence of a common name or common identifying signs, symbols, tattoos, graffiti, or attire or other distinguishing characteristics. Such term shall not include three or more persons, associated in fact, whether formal or informal, who are not engaged in criminal gang activity.
Why children join gangs
Children join gangs for various reasons. The main reason we discover is to fill a need that they are not getting in their home, school or surroundings. Reasons for joining:

Access to drugs, money, sex and guns

What to Look For
Possible Signs of Gang Involvement

Child has a new set of friends

Clothing tends to be all same color including hats and shoes

Child is using new language and hand gestures with friends

Child is defiant

Child is skipping school

Child has high-end electronics or clothing and with no explanation where they got it from

Child has spray paint on hands
The most common crimes committed by gang members are vandalism, burglary, theft, robbery, drug (possession and sales), battery, aggravated assault and statutory rape
