Marietta City Council honored Parks, Recreation and Facilities employee Sam Stephens on Nov. 13 for rescuing a two-year-old child who ran into the pond at Laurel Park on Oct. 30. City officials proclaimed Nov. 13 Sam Stephens Day in Marietta in recognition of his bravery and willingness to put his life on the line for Marietta's citizens.
While the child was playing with his family, he wandered away and ran into the pond at the park. Stephens, a city grounds foreman, was cutting the grass on his lawnmower when he saw the child run into the lake.
Even though Stephens cannot swim, he headed into the pond without hesitation. After Stephens pulled the child from the pond, he stayed with the family to await the arrival of the paramedics. The child suffered no injuries due to Stephens' quick thinking, thus the paramedics released the child to his mother at the scene.
