The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) presented Marietta the Distinguished Budget Award for its presentation of the current fiscal year budget. The award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and represents a significant achievement by the city.
The award represents a commitment by Marietta's Finance Department and staff in meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
"We appreciate the opportunity to thank our employees for the great job they do for all of us, not only the folks that are here but also the citizens of the city of Marietta," city manager Bill Bruton said. "The Government Finance Officers Association is an international organization that looks at how you prepare your budget so it can be understood by the public and laypersons who are looking at a budget for the first time," he said. "I want to congratulate Marietta's finance director Sam Lady, budget manager Lori Duncan, and also the folks in their departments and within the city government that work on the budget many months during the year to make sure the budget is as tight as we can get it and still provide the great service we do to the community."
What Marietta's Finance Department did to receive award
- Satisfied nationally recognized effective budget guidelines
- Guidelines are designed to assess how well city's budget serves as policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device
- Marietta's budget must have been rated "proficient" in all four categories
"Lori works very hard and does most of the work, and we work very hard to keep costs under control," Lady said. "The budget is available on the city's website, including the budget in brief, which Lori has done an excellent job on."
"We're very, very proud of the employees we have in the city of Marietta," mayor Steve Tumlin said.
The budget document contains information about the performance of more than 25 city functions, with a total budget of $278.6 million for FY2013, Marietta's budget manager Lori Duncan said.
This is the 20th year overall, and 18th consecutive year, Marietta has received the award.
