City leaders appoint, reappoint members to four city boards

City leaders appointed members to the Historic Preservation Commission, Planning Commission and Ethics Committee and reappointed members to the Marietta Redevelopment Corporation (MRC) board of directors March 7.
Historic Preservation Commission appointment
- City Council appointed Renee J. Severson to Ward 5 of the Historic Preservation Commission for a three-year term beginning immediately and expiring March 13, 2015
What Historic Preservation Commission does
- Protects and maintains Marietta's historical significance
- Protects and enhances Marietta's historical and aesthetic attraction for tourists and visitors, which promotes and stimulates business
- Provides protection, enhancement, maintenance and use of places, districts, sites, buildings, structures and works of art that have special historical, architectural, cultural or aesthetic interest or value
Planning Commission appointment
- Council appointed John Schupp to Ward 4 of the Planning Commission for a three-year term beginning immediately and expiring March 13, 2015
What Planning Commission does
- Review and recommend comprehensive plan or amendments for development of political jurisdiction to City Council for adoption
- Review and recommend zoning ordinance or resolution and map for its political jurisdiction to City Council for adoption
- Review and recommend regulations for the subdivision of land within its political jurisdiction to City Council for adoption and administer regulations that may be adopted
MRC board of directors reappointments
- Council reappointed Pete Bilson, Ray Buday, Mark Gibbs, Ron Francis, Terry Lee, George Bentley to the MRC board of directors for two-year terms expiring April 10, 2014
What the Marietta Redevelopment Corporation does
- Serves as the redevelopment agency of city of Marietta at the pleasure of City Council
- Assists with revitalizing neighborhoods, commercial areas and other distressed properties to strengthen the tax base of city
- Advises City Council on redevelopment matters and helps implement its redevelopment expectation for Marietta
- Carefully evaluates redevelopment opportunities and reuse options for assembled properties
- Facilitates private and public investment for redevelopment projects
Ethics Committee appointment
- Mayor Steve Tumlin issued oath of office to Arthur Vaughn, who will fill expiring term of Warren Herron on Ethics Committee
- Two-year term beginning March 10, 2012, and expiring March 10, 2014
What Ethics Committee does
- Receives and evaluates written complaints against Marietta's elected officials
